- Bump minimum version to Python 3.6.
- Ran pyupgrade for Python 3.6, then again, then
- ran black
- fixed a lingering unused import, and
- removed a duplicate exception.

Google Python style guide says to import modules.
Clean up all our stdlib imports. Leave the repo ones alone
for now as that's a much bigger shave.

The trace file is local to the workspace. We shouldn't tell the user
that on every command that they run.

Notes to the user need to go to stderr, and tracing should not be on for
fast exiting invocations (such as --help).
This makes it so that release/update-manpages works.

There is a standard Python "trace" module, so having a local trace.py
prevents us being able to import that. Rename the module to avoid.
